The earliest samplers date back to the sixteenth century.  Traditionally they were a piece of embroidery produced as a demonstration or test of skill in needlework.  They often included the alphabet, figures, motifs, decorative borders and sometimes the name of the person who embroidered it and the date. These modern day versions have just as much charm.
